26 killed, 183 injured in 140 road accidents

According to a statement from the ROP, 26 people were killed and 183 injured in 140 accidents that took place between February 20 and 26.

Of these, 68 were vehicle collisions, 38 were collisions with fixed objects and 24 were run overs. Ten cases were reported of drivers losing control of their vehicles. Of the 26 deaths reported, nine of them were from the Sharqiyah, six from Muscat and three each from the Batinah, Dakhliyah and Al Wusta regions. Two people lost their lives in Musandam.

The worst accident took place in Wadi Kabir, in which three people died and two were injured. As reported in Muscat Daily (February 23), the accident occurred when a driver travelling from the Al Bustan area lost control and rammed into pedestrians on the pavement.

Ambulances called in for 109 accidents in a week According to statistics for the period from February 20 to 26 released by the ambulance unit of the ROP, ambulances were called out for 109 traffic accidents in the governorates of Muscat and Dhofar, and in the regions of the Batinah, Dakhliyah and Sharqiyah, in which 16 people were seriously injured, 62 had medium-level injuries and 31 had minor injuries. Thirteen deaths occurred while being transferred from the accident site.

Tips for drivers while leaving cars unattended
  • The ROP has said in a statement that most car thefts occur due to the carelessness of drivers or owners.They said that drivers should lock their vehicles properly and not keep the keys inside.
  • They should switch off the engine even if they are to leave the car unattended only for a short period.
  • Drivers are also requested not to keep valuable items inside the car. They have been urged not to park their vehicles in deserted places and dark areas for a long time.
